Preparation for Hemorrhoid Banding

ITEMS TO PURCHASE
  1. 2 Fleet Enemas
 
SEVEN DAYS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
  1. Aspirin (or aspirin-containing pills) and/or Plavix should be stopped for seven days.
            Do not stop these medicines until the day before the procedure IF you have had a heart attack, angina, heart stent, or stroke . All arthritis medication, Tylenol, and other Rx medicine is ok take.
 
FIVE DAYS BEFORE THE PROCEDURE
 
  1. Coumadin should be stopped 5 days prior.
 
DAY OF PROCEDURE
  1. Have nothing by mouth after midnight, including water. If your procedure is in the afternoon you may have clear liquids up to six hours before the scheduled arrival time (example: arrival time is 1:00 PM, you may have clear liquids only until 7:00 AM).
  2. Take your medication on the morning of the procedure with sips of water.
  3. Administer the first Fleet enema rectally one and half hours prior to your arrival time.
  4. Administer the second Fleet enema 20 minutes later.
  5. Arrive at your scheduled appointment time.
  6. Bring a list of your medications, insurance cards and photo ID.
  7. After the procedure you must have a responsible adult drive you home. Taking a cab is not an option.
  8. You may not drive or work until the next day.
  9. You will be at the endoscopy center for about 2 hours.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SEDATION
 
Intravenous sedatives used for endoscopic procedures include Fentanyl and Propofol. These medications provide amnesia and pain relief. You are breathing on your own. It is not considered general anesthesia. The only reasons not to receive Propofol are pregnancy, egg allergy and soy allergy.
